NEW COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE WORKSHOP
The Theatrical Body – An Exploration of Commedia dell’Arte Following the success of the International Commedia dell’Arte Day in Leichhardt, in February 2011, Fools in Progress has created a unique workshop dedicated to the art of theatre masks, performance and improvisation. This is a unique opportunity to learn from European trained actors and discover traditional Commedia characters and their distinct personalities. The 8 week workshop is suitable for: Drama and Italian teachers who wish to deepen their knowledge of Commedia Actors who want to explore the nature of comedy Physical performers who want to experiment with this ancient tradition Anyone who wants to have fun!
Learning outcomes By the end of the workshops participant will have: Experienced masked performance and devised a Commedia dell’Arte plot. Improvised the creation of Lazzi and other comical situations suitable for a contemporary audience. Acquired an understanding of Commedia dell’Arte characters. Experienced how to approach masked performance and how to devise a Commedia dell’Arte plot. A knowledge of the history of Commedia dell’Arte and its development in Italy and Europe. The series of 8 weekly workshops for a total of 16 hours will be structured as it follows: 1° Relaxation technique. How to reach the Neutral Stand. The Walk. Chronological introduction to Commedia dell’Arte. General introduction to the characters. 2° Relaxation technique. The grammar of movement. Voice warm up. Special vocal requirements for Commedia characters. Introduction to the Masks. 3° Commedia dell’arte movement structure. Introduction to 3 Commedia characters: the Zanni, Pantalone and Pulcinella. 4° Introduction to 2 Commedia female characters: Colombina, the Innamorata. How to approach the creation of a Commedia dell’arte original plot the Canovaccio. 5° Introduction to 4 more characters of Commedia: Il Capitano, il Dottor Balanzone, the Innamorato and Arlecchino. The use of la picca and of the batòn. 6° Vocal training. Finding who you are in commedia how to create a believable character. Investigating the psychology of Commedia characters. From the body to the mind. Improvisation. 7° Improvisation. Using the characters studied in the previous weeks the group will work to develop a 30 minutes performance (6 scenes of approx. 4-5 minutes each). 8° Voice warm up. Exploring Commedia costumes and final adjustments to the Canovaccio. The group will perform the plot.
The Trainers:
Bianca Bonino is an actress, acting teacher and stage director. Born in Turin, she graduated from the Centro d'Arte Drammatica di Torino where she trained in Pantomime, Dance, Fencing, Yoga, Judo, History of Theatre, Vocal Training, Singing, Elocution and Acting. In 1985 and 1986 stage Director Ugo Gregoretti hired her for two plays with the Teatro Stabile di Torino: Il Critico by R.B. Sheridan, and Le Miserie 'd Monsu' Travet by A. Bersezio. In 1987 Bonino started teaching at the Centro d'Arte Drammatica di Torino. In 1994 she migrated to Australia. She has been involved for several years as Company Secretary for the Italian Forum Cultural Centre. During this time she produced several cultural events in Leichhardt and for the Italian Institute of Culture of Sydney. In 2008 she was responsible for an innovative Lectura Dantis performed by three women for the Dante Alighieri Society. The following year she staged an adaptation of The Mountain Giants by Luigi Pirandello and in 2010 the reading of Interrogatorio a Maria by Giovanni Testori. She is currently enrolled at the UNSW. She is specialized in the role of Pantalone, Pulcinella and Isabella. 2010 STC Commedia dell’Arte workshop with Darren Gilshenan,
Guillaume Barrière trained in several schools in Paris: the School of Acting François Florent and the School of Acting Radka Riaskova. After a few years doing theatre, television and voice-over work, Guillaume became interested in clowning, commedia dell'arte and improvisation. He started developing a series of improvisations with director Françoise Merle, (who used to work alongside Ariane Mnouchkine from Theatre du Soleil)which lead to a One Man Show performed in Paris for many months. He met Mario Gonzalez, head professor at “Le Conservatoire Supérieur d’Art Dramatique” in Paris who was working on a performance called "The Clowns". Guillaume rehearsed and trained under Mario's guidance with three other clowns. He also practised commedia techniques, the use of masks and the art of improvisation. He held several workshops in France and Belgium before coming to Australia in 2002. He is currently completing a degree in Theatre Studies at the University of New England while teaching French and drama in Sydney. Guillaume usually performs as il Dottore, Zanni (Pazzarello) and Florindo.

intendo ringraziarvi - scusandomi per il ritardo - per la piacevole rappresentazione teatrale che avete brillantemente saputo mettere in scena.
Avete catturato l'attenzione del pubblico attraverso la grande naturalezza con cui avete recitato, riuscendo - con risultato che definirei non comune - a divertire ed allo stesso tempo a rilassare lo spettatore.
Fin dalla sua nascita, la vostra compagnia teatrale ha dimostrato, oltre a qualita', elevate doti organizzative. Mi riferisco in particolare alla vostra grande capacita' nell'ottenere sponsorizzazioni, atteggiamento che dovrebbe essere comune a chiunque si accinga ad organizzare eventi culturali di questo tipo.
